What follows after the prelude is a digest of the work of R. D Laing, ‘The Politics Of Experience’. Laing made valuable contributions to critical thinking in fearless appraisals of institutions that have become sacred cows. The untouchableness of the medical institution approaches the untouchableness of the family, and precisely because of these untouchable status major problems arise within them and from people acting out roles of them. This is a collection of photos showing the work which was brought together that made the Mad World Exhibition in 2017. You can read about the ideas by following THIS LINK. The exhibition held at its heart a space where questioning of attitudes to mental health, mental illness, madness and identity was encouraged particularly in light of the Psychiatric Survivors Movement which legitimately challenges and drives forward understandings today.
This was a collision between 2 meanings of autism. The word’s meaning has broadened and shifted balance since able autism, asperger’s, has become recognised, and as another level of a condition whose severe versions had been recognised sooner. While more severe autism is a clearly visible condition, social deficits autism in folks of average ability had more struggle to be recognised, against interpreting as just part of character or of mental health. I am ‘Neurodivergent’. I am ‘Dyslexic’ and have lived my life negotiating what I was told was. Dyslexia is a ‘neurodevelopmental disorder’ which for many years a controversial thing. Growing up I realised how some people believed that children (like me) were ‘stupid’, ‘lazy’, ‘incompetent’ in relation to schoolwork (to some individuals); whilst others recognised that I struggled to see what was on the printed page yet could manage to negotiate tasks sufficiently when given agency.
