York Circle - Mad People’s History from Ancient Times to the Present

This talk by Geoffrey Reaume, associate professor with York’s Faculty of Graduate Studies and with the School of Health Policy and Management at York’s Faculty of Health, discusses the history of mad people from ancient to modern times, from the perspectives of those deemed mad. The purpose of this discussion is to raise issues about how people considered mad have been treated over the centuries in the western world and how people who have experienced madness have interpreted their own histories in a way that challenges conventional ideas on this subject. Most importantly, this presentation is intended to show mad peoples’ abilities and contributions to society as we fight against prejudice and advocate for inclusion of people with psychiatric disabilities.
