About Film: Discussion and Screening @ The Banshee Labyrinth
Jan 5 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
About Film: Discussion and Screening @ The Banshee Labyrinth | Scotland | United Kingdom

An Edinburgh based film club, our aim is to deliver an inclusive and fun film event that gives film enthusiast the chance to deepen their film studies knowledge. Whether you’re a complete beginner, a student, or even a film theory lecturer, we know you’ll get something out of About Film.

Every month a film is shown, followed by a discussion; this discussion is focussed on a specific film studies topic. But don’t worry, no prior knowledge is needed. Technical jargon is avoided or demystified, and a friendly atmosphere promoted, while we tackle some of the debates in film. The aim is to try and learn from each other in a mutually beneficial exchange of ideas, as opposed to simply listening to one person rabbit on. About Film is not here to give you a lecture or tell you how to think!

The events are loosely grouped together into courses. A course spans over five or six events that have both a common theme and shared learning outcomes. For example, across the Autumn/Winter 2016 course there will be a focus on issues around authorship and originality in film. There is also the ambition to run a course of About Film as a free accredited course that is open to anyone who wants to take part.

Our events are always free and un-ticketed, they take place on the first Thursday of the month and start at 7pm (typically ending at 10pm). You’ll find us in the cinema room at The Banshee Labyrinth on Niddry Street, Edinburgh.

PhD in an Hour: Teaching for a fairer society? Primary schools and multiculturalism @ Royal Dick, Summerhall | Scotland | United Kingdom

One PhD student, one fascinating topic, one café, one hour. Enjoy a cup tea while a PhD student shares his/her interesting findings and groundbreaking ideas. The aim is to demystify the PhD process and make it accessible to all.

This month PhD student Ania Byerly will be hosting, “What do primary school teachers in Scotland think about multicultural and anti-racist education?”

Multicultural schools are a fact and so is racism and discrimination of minorities in our society. What teachers do everyday in their classrooms and what they are told they should be doing through policies is often debated. Ania Byerly, PhD student with the University of Edinburgh, examines teacher attitudes to diversity and looks for examples of practice where all children are encouraged to be open, kind, ready to be citizens of the world, questioning and critical of prejudice and discrimination they all see daily in their lives. Ania believes school is not only for teaching children how to read and write and confront this view with those of primary teachers themselves.

Join Ania in discussing ideas and approaches towards creating a fairer Scotland. Let’s make this PhD in an Hour event as multicultural as our schools!
