Prewired: An Edinburgh programming club for under 19s @ CodeBase
Jan 11 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Prewired: An Edinburgh programming club for under 19s @ CodeBase | Scotland | United Kingdom

Computers let you create anything you can think of. Prewired is here to help enthusiastic young coders of any ability to do just that.

Wednesday evenings are for you to play around with whatever technologies and programming languages you want.  You can learn something brand new, practice something you already know, start a project, get help with something you’re stuck on, or even teach others.

Last year we’ve had people working on basic Python, Python games, websites (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), Java, Scratch and Arduinos.

If there are different topics, languages or technologies you want to cover, just let us know!

Please sign up for as many sessions as you can.  Coming regularly makes it easier to make friends and do as much coding as possible 🙂

Resources

Please bring your own laptops if you can, as you’ll be able to get to work a lot faster on a system you’re familiar with. We do have spares, but bring one if you can.

There will be some very light refreshments, but not much, so make sure you’ve had your dinner or a snack before you come if you usually eat around this time.

Location

The entrance to CodeBase is on 38 Castle Street – come in to reception and go straight into the hot desking space. You sign in at the Prewired registration desk.

Parents

Parents are welcome to accompany their children, we have a sofa or two that you can occupy (for example if your child is young). However participants under the age of 11 must be accompanied. If you do come along, please feel free to bring your own laptop and get stuck in with one of the coding sessions if this interests you! We can alsways help you if you want to get started exploring coding yourself.

Getting involved if you’re over 19 and not a parent..

If you’re interested in mentoring, sponsoring, helping to organise or otherwise get involved, please email hello [at] prewired.org and we can arrange for you to attend one of our sessions and see how it works.

Cancellations

If you sign up but realise you can’t make it, or if you accidentally book extra spaces for any reason, please make sure to cancel your ticket so the place can be released to someone else!

Kenneth Murray, Hepatitis B, and Biotechnology in Edinburgh @ Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh
Jan 25 @ 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm
Kenneth Murray, Hepatitis B, and Biotechnology in Edinburgh @ Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh | Scotland | United Kingdom

Speakers: Professor Steve Sturdy and Dr Farah Huzair (University of Edinburgh)

It was science that was outlawed in other countries. Under the strictest security, and contained within a germ warfare centre, a team of geneticists, headed by the University of Edinburgh’s Kenneth Murray were making history. Their groundbreaking work in creating the first ever recombinant DNA vaccine – targeting Hepatitis B – was a real success for the team of genetic engineers.

But how did Murray become involved in this venture? And what of the peculiar combination of circumstances, both local and international, that enabled him to lead the way in this new scientific discipline? This talk will explore these questions, shedding light on the man and the work whose discovery has saved the lives of millions.

Refreshments at 4pm, seminar starts at 4.30pm.

This talk is part of the Edinburgh History of Medicine Group series, a collaboration between the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh.

BabblED: A modular system for storing information in DNA @ National Library of Scotland | Scotland | United Kingdom

As part of an internationally-renowned synthetic biology competition, a team of undergraduate students from the University of Edinburgh designed a DNA storage system to rival current archival storage techniques. In collaboration with the National Library, they implemented their system by archiving the last letter of Mary Queen of Scots in a sequence of DNA. Three of the team take us through how they achieved this and the implication for the future of data storage.

Mending myelin: orchestrating brain repair in MS @ Wellcome Auditorium
Apr 30 @ 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm
Mending myelin: orchestrating brain repair in MS @ Wellcome Auditorium

In multiple sclerosis there is damage to the myelin sheaths of nerves (demyelination) which reduces the ability of nerves to conduct electricity and makes them prone to degeneration.

The brain can regenerate the myelin sheath (remyelination) which restores electrical conduction and protects the nerves. However, in people with multiple sclerosis, this repair system fails and we do not understand why.

In her inaugural lecture, Professor Anna Williams will discuss how studying human multiple sclerosis brain tissue and laboratory models of remyelination can increase our understanding of how this repair process works and why it fails. Understanding this better may lead to new therapies to improve remyelination and reduce disability in multiple sclerosis.
