Feb 15 @ 4:30 pm – 6:45 pm
Edinburgh Medical School: Let’s talk about health: Breast cancer; the advent of personalised medicine @ Queen's Medical Research Institute | Scotland | United Kingdom

“Let’s Talk About Health” is all about advancing our knowledge of health and what goes wrong in disease. Join us to hear about new research in our University that is increasing our understanding of diseases and providing new advances in treatment. Guests will be able to talk to our young scientists about their research, and S4 and S5 pupils will have an opportunity to tour our labs before the talks. We look forward to seeing you there!

Professor Karen Chapman

University/BHF Centre for Cardiovascular Science

Most people associate breast cancer with women. However, men can also be affected. Currently, 1 in 8 women in the UK will be affected by breast cancer during their lifetime. Huge steps have been made in understanding some of the complexities underpinning this disease and developing increasingly effective treatment strategies. This started here in Scotland, with Beatson’s discovery that in some women, removal of the ovaries can shrink tumours. Join us to hear about some of the key advances that have led to over 85% of women now living more than 5 years after diagnosis of breast cancer. We will explore exciting research aimed at developing new treatment strategies, that are personalised to the individual patient’s cancer, to maximise treatment effectiveness and limit unpleasant side-effects.

Speakers

Dr Helen Creedon, and Professor Val Brunton, Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre, The University of Edinburgh

Doors open 4.30pm with teas and coffees available.

Refreshments available after event.

This event may be photographed and/or recorded for promotional or recruitment materials for the University or University approved third parties.

Mark Wallinger: Artist’s Talk @ The Fruitmarket Gallery
Mar 4 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Mark Wallinger: Artist's Talk @ The Fruitmarket Gallery | Scotland | United Kingdom

Mark Wallinger will be in conversation with The Fruitmarket Gallery director, Fiona Bradley about his practice and his exhibition, in two parts which runs at The Fruitmarket Gallery and Dundee Contemporary Arts from 4 March – 4 June.

Known for a practice as stylistically diverse as it is politically engaged, Mark Wallinger creates work that encompasses painting, sculpture, photography, film, installation, performance and public art.

This exhibition, presented in two parts, one at The Fruitmarket Gallery and the other at Dundee Contemporary Arts, has been brought together in the context of his newest body of work, the id Paintings. A selection from this series of vast paintings, each 360cm high (twice Wallinger’s height) and 180cm wide (his height again, and also the extent of his reach with both arms outstretched) is on show in each part of the exhibition.

These paintings bring identity into focus as a recurring theme within Wallinger’s practice. Painted by hand (and simultaneously by each hand, the left mirroring the right) they bridge image and action. They move his way of working, as Wallinger has said, from ‘painting ‘I’s’ to ‘I paint’.

The standing figure (the subject who stands – and stands up – for something) is one of the most powerful ways in which Wallinger explores identity. This exhibition brings together several such figures, including the bear of Sleeper and the myriad ‘I’s of the Self Portrait paintings. It also moves beyond the standing figure to look at the importance of naming, marking and symmetry in the artist’s work.

Defending Scotland's Wildlife: An evening with OneKind and Andrew Parkinson @ Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh | Scotland | United Kingdom

Scotland’s wildlife need a voice now more than ever. Come along and find out how we’re stepping up our efforts to defend Scotland’s wildlife from cruelty and persecution. Featuring talks by OneKind Director, Harry Huyton, and ethical wildlife photographer, Andrew Parkinson, as well as an exhibition of wildlife art. Join us for a fantastic evening with OneKind.

Come to an evening with OneKind and guest speaker, multi-award winning wildlife photographer Andrew Parkinson. Andrew is regarded as one of the worlds’ most ethical wildlife photographers, managing to capture aspects of behaviour seldom seen before, let alone photographed. Andrew’s passion for wildlife is only exceeded by his skill as a photographer – demonstrated by his many awards and his work for the BBC Wildlife and National Geographic magazine amongst other prestigious clients. There will be a chance to learn more about Andrew’s experience of photographing some of the country’s most magnificent wildlife and the challenges he comes across.

Over the last 18 months, OneKind has been stepping up it’s efforts to defend Scotland’s wildlife. You’ll hear more about why this is so necessary and what OneKind’s future plans are from Harry Huyton, OneKind’s Director. Harry is a veteran campaigner with a passion for wildlife and will be there to answer any and all of your questions. Libby Anderson, OneKind’s Policy Adviser, will also be talking about one of our longer-term campaigns that has delivered big steps forward in wildlife protection. Libby is one of the most experienced animal advocates in Scotland and will also be there to take your questions and discuss what’s next.

The evening will end in a Q&A giving you the opportunity to ask any burning questions relating to wildlife photography, wildlife or the work of OneKind.

There will also be an exhibition of paintings of Scottish wildlife by a number of award-winning Scottish artists.

If you believe Scotland’s wildlife needs to be defended from cruelty and persecution we hope to see you there!

And – we’re even providing wine and soft drinks!

Mind management workshop – Learn and explore the realistic benefits of mindfulness, meditation and self hypnosis for managing your mind.by Leon Paterson

According to research we are exposed to over 5000 adverts a day – social media, billboards, 24 hour news all compete for our attention. Many people’s thoughts are passively following where their attention leads. This is because they have learned to respond almost automatically to the world.

Yet most people are able to concentrate their attention effortlessly in situations that demand it. What enables this to be achieved is party down to the context. A working environment for example will activate you into becoming focused on what’s important… your work! What is more challenging is managing your attention independently.

We have incredible purposeful minds that alert us to things that seem important. They just might not be important at that particular moment. Going over and over an argument you had, or repeatedly replaying something you regret doing. Are examples of unwanted thoughts that can seem automatic.

Research demonstrates people who are better able to manage their thoughts and attention have a better quality of life, are more in control of their emotions, and have a range of ways to view the same situation. The good news is these are skills that everybody can learn and develop. And in this highly practical introduction you will learn how to apply mind management skills for your own personal development.
