During this time of the public health crisis this calendar has been suspended and not updated.  For the meantime there are no public Ragged University events and the advice to not gather in public is recommended.  Stay safe, stay social, try to stay at a physical distance, use a mask (like they do in operating theatres). Hopefully this will be behind us soon enough but for the meantime we have to collectively find ways of having meaningful interactions via the digital or at a distance.

Edinburgh Medical School: Let’s talk about health: Breast cancer; the advent of personalised medicine @ Queen's Medical Research Institute | Scotland | United Kingdom

“Let’s Talk About Health” is all about advancing our knowledge of health and what goes wrong in disease. Join us to hear about new research in our University that is increasing our understanding of diseases and providing new advances in treatment. Guests will be able to talk to our young scientists about their research, and S4 and S5 pupils will have an opportunity to tour our labs before the talks. We look forward to seeing you there!

Professor Karen Chapman

University/BHF Centre for Cardiovascular Science

Most people associate breast cancer with women. However, men can also be affected. Currently, 1 in 8 women in the UK will be affected by breast cancer during their lifetime. Huge steps have been made in understanding some of the complexities underpinning this disease and developing increasingly effective treatment strategies. This started here in Scotland, with Beatson’s discovery that in some women, removal of the ovaries can shrink tumours. Join us to hear about some of the key advances that have led to over 85% of women now living more than 5 years after diagnosis of breast cancer. We will explore exciting research aimed at developing new treatment strategies, that are personalised to the individual patient’s cancer, to maximise treatment effectiveness and limit unpleasant side-effects.

Speakers

Dr Helen Creedon, and Professor Val Brunton, Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre, The University of Edinburgh

Doors open 4.30pm with teas and coffees available.

Refreshments available after event.

This event may be photographed and/or recorded for promotional or recruitment materials for the University or University approved third parties.

Jun 22 @ 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm
Ragged University: 'The Importance of Being Smelly' plus 'Improvised Fiction Meets Research' @ Cabaret Voltaire | Scotland | United Kingdom

Come along and put your feet up at Ragged University, a free education project where everyone is welcome and we socialise around learning… It is informal and there is a bite to eat, you are also welcome to bring some food to share if you want.

The Importance of Being Smelly by Mairi MacLeod

You might not think your sense of smell is particularly essential, but research is showing that we give and receive all sorts of important signals through the olfactory channel and scientists have dubbed humans “the scented ape”. We glean information on each others’ age, gender, emotions and even personality through our noses, but perhaps the most important function of our sense of smell is that of mate choice. In this talk, I’ll explain why liking your partner’s natural smell is vital for relationship satisfaction, sexual attraction and fidelity, fertility and our children’s health. I’ll also reveal the rather surprising effects of perfume and of “the pill” on the biological signals we give out and receive via smelliness.

There will be some food provided, and everyone is invited to put some food on the table to share if they like – there is no obligation.  During the break there is a chance to eat, have a drink and socialise

Improvised Fiction meets research: Creative and pioneering ethnographic filmmaker Jean Rouch’s lasting legacy by John Morrison

The genesis of the Ethnofiction genre can be attributed to the creative praxis (theory in action) of pioneering French anthropologist and filmmaker Jean Rouch, they can be identified by today’s definitions as hybrids of ethnographic documentary and fictional film genres.

During the 1950s, while working as an ethnologist for the French state in West Africa, Rouch asked the participants of his studies to respond to a subject inspired by aspects of their real-life experiences and act them out in front of the camera as fictional improvisations. This participatory and playful approach to visual ethnography was later dubbed by critics ‘Ethnofiction’.

Manchester Sound(s); Silent Notes From the Past by Dominique Tessier

Following on from my Ragged talk on Manchester History where I explored the Mancunian branches of ex-Prime Minister David Cameron’s family tree, I’m turning my local history attentions to a musical history of Manchester, reflecting on the roots and compositions of Manchester Sound(s) and the silent notes of the past..

In the break there is some food provided and everyone is welcome to bring along an item of food to put on the table to share, and also take away what they will eat at the end.

The Psychology of Dehumanization by Alex Dunedin

How much we relate to others as human defines how we interact with the social world and what opportunities are conferred on us.  How human we appear in the eyes of others dictates how we will be treated.  When people are stripped of being perceived as human hurt and harm is visited upon them.  At the extreme end of dehumanization behaviours we find the unspeakable atrocities of genocide where groups of people have been devalued.

Prejudices take root in apathies, and it seems that simple apathy can be enough to manifest behaviours which dementalize and depersonalize individuals.  The psychology of dehumanization is related to how we encounter the world through our experience and our senses.  Sometimes it takes as little as a question to cause someone to completely re-adjust their perception of a group of people.  This is very positive when we think of the worrying things which can come about if such ignorance is left unchecked.

Come along to Cabaret Voltaire (36-38 Blair St, Edinburgh, EH1 1QR) from 7pm. Come along for a bite of food, a chance to socialise and learn in an informal setting. The event is free and there are two talks separated by a break…

Poppies for Peace, Films for Freedom! by Simon Byrom

Simon Byrom is talking about his film Poppies for Peace – a powerful, thought provoking film is a tribute to: Harry Patch (1898 2009: last surviving soldier of WW1) and Tony Benn (1925 2014: the great politician of Peace). The documentary film was created by Simon with the purpose of reflecting on the current state of the World 100 years since “The War To End All Wars” the film asks the question: “Has their sacrifice been betrayed by our failure to end war?”. This thought provoking film reflects on the 100th anniversary of The War To End All Wars.

There will be some food during the break and an opportunity to chat before the next short talk

Lions Led by Donkeys; A Memorial to Commemorate Those Lost at the Battle of Loos by Alex Dunedin

I have chosen to give a short presentation on this part of World War One because I came to read Alan Clark’s book ‘The Donkeys’. Im someone who is lucky enough never to have seen war but to have known by proximity how badly war has affected many. War is the true embodiment of madness and horror, and part of that I fear is the lack of holding to account the idiots in charge sometimes.Drawing on Alan Clark’s history of the rise of a cluster of “donkeys” to the High Command, this is to commemorate the thousands of men who were failed and sent to their senseless doom by the hubris, pride, pomp, lack of strategy and idiocy of certain specific Field Marshal’s like Field Marshal Haig. I think it is not just enough to remember the dead but understand the mistakes which were part of the catastrophe. Out of dignity and respect, some knowledge of the failures that took place needs to be part of our collective living memory.

Dances of Universal Peace: Honouring our Roots! @ Augustine United Church | Scotland | United Kingdom

Place: Augustine United Church, 41 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh,
EH1 1EL
Time: 5.30pm (for 6pm start) to 9.30pm
Cost: FREE (though donations always welcome)

Events are taking place around the world to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the
Dances of Universal Peace (DUP). For the first time, 5 local mentored and trained
DUP teachers (& 2 extra musicians) are offering an event together. They will lead
Dances, spiritual Walks, share some wonderful stories about Murshid SAM – and
perhaps share something about their own personal, often life-changing, Dance
journeys.

There will be time for talking and eating as well as Dancing – all who come are invited
to bring a small offering of ready-prepared vegetarian food to share. A selection of
teas/coffee will be provided. Plus Murshid SAM’s favourite treat!
No previous experience is necessary, all are welcome
Wear comfortable loose clothing and soft shoes – or bare feet.

A wee bit of history:

Samuel Lewis (Murshid SAM) – pictured on the
right, dancing in Central Park, New York in the
1960’s (which explains the clothing!) . Murshid
SAM created the Dances in the 1960’s as a form
of ‘Peace Through the Arts’, in which moving
and singing sacred phrases together creates a
sense of peace and unity – a joyful oneness.

To help us with the planning of this event,
please contact Alice Fateah Saunders: [email protected] or 0131 6646206
to let us know that you are coming.

Ragged University: Discussion @ Scotts Monument, East Princes Street Gardens
Jul 10 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Ragged University: Discussion @ Scotts Monument, East Princes Street Gardens | Scotland | United Kingdom

The first venue where it was scheduled to take place was the Lighthouse Bookshop and they were approached and asked not to host the talk. The Mairi Oliver, one of the owners got in touch and said that they were not interested in hosting the discussion. As the coordinator, and having had a large number of conversations surrounding this it took a while investigating the subject matter, I sought another space to hold the event.

After booking St John’s church community hall, the person who objected to the event at the bookshop then contacted the church hall explaining their dislike for what was happening. The Associate Rector Stephen Holmes got in touch and declined the event from taking place on the grounds that he felt it might encourage people not to vaccinate.

All these things took place in the absence of any discussion, any prior communication and without any right to reply with either the speaker of the event (Mike McInnes) or the person who arranged the event (Alex Dunedin). This is unfortunate as it would have been much better to find out the objections and work through a co-enquiry about the issues (which will hopefully yet emerge).

At least two things are going on here. One which is of great interest medically and scientifically, and another which is of great interest sociologically, which warrant being examined here. Surrounding these we have larger issues of magnitude pertaining to what education and learning necessarily involve, as well as the issues of ethics which I believe should be both our means and ends…

Best wishes,

Alex Dunedin

Autism: The Plot Against Consciousness/Cognition/Language by Mike McInnes

For the first time in our evolutionary history children in colossal numbers are non-linguistic – around 35 million today and rising. Autism is a preventable condition caused by two principles – sugars in foetus and later, if that is not sufficient, by aluminium in vaccines

Autism exits only because the health establishment opted for the view (in 1973) that fats are toxic and sugars benign. The result was an explosion of diabetes/obesity/dementia – all of which are driven by the same mechanism – sugar suppression of glutamine synthetase – the enzyme that drives glucose into the brain – the hungry brain upgrades the appetite hormones and the cycle repeats…..endlessly……the more we eat the hungrier we become…

The role of the health establishment in this tragedy has been hidden for more than half a century. As diabetes/obesity/dementia exploded across the western world – a new condition appeared as if from nowhere – previously unknown in history – autism – it tracked these other conditions – but seemed initially not to be directly related.
