Prewired: An Edinburgh programming club for under 19s @ CodeBase | Scotland | United Kingdom

Computers let you create anything you can think of. Prewired is here to help enthusiastic young coders of any ability to do just that.

Wednesday evenings are for you to play around with whatever technologies and programming languages you want.  You can learn something brand new, practice something you already know, start a project, get help with something you’re stuck on, or even teach others.

Last year we’ve had people working on basic Python, Python games, websites (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), Java, Scratch and Arduinos.

If there are different topics, languages or technologies you want to cover, just let us know!

Please sign up for as many sessions as you can.  Coming regularly makes it easier to make friends and do as much coding as possible 🙂

Resources

Please bring your own laptops if you can, as you’ll be able to get to work a lot faster on a system you’re familiar with. We do have spares, but bring one if you can.

There will be some very light refreshments, but not much, so make sure you’ve had your dinner or a snack before you come if you usually eat around this time.

Location

The entrance to CodeBase is on 38 Castle Street – come in to reception and go straight into the hot desking space. You sign in at the Prewired registration desk.

Parents

Parents are welcome to accompany their children, we have a sofa or two that you can occupy (for example if your child is young). However participants under the age of 11 must be accompanied. If you do come along, please feel free to bring your own laptop and get stuck in with one of the coding sessions if this interests you! We can alsways help you if you want to get started exploring coding yourself.

Getting involved if you’re over 19 and not a parent..

If you’re interested in mentoring, sponsoring, helping to organise or otherwise get involved, please email hello [at] prewired.org and we can arrange for you to attend one of our sessions and see how it works.

Feb 15 @ 4:30 pm – 6:45 pm
Edinburgh Medical School: Let’s talk about health: Breast cancer; the advent of personalised medicine @ Queen's Medical Research Institute | Scotland | United Kingdom

“Let’s Talk About Health” is all about advancing our knowledge of health and what goes wrong in disease. Join us to hear about new research in our University that is increasing our understanding of diseases and providing new advances in treatment. Guests will be able to talk to our young scientists about their research, and S4 and S5 pupils will have an opportunity to tour our labs before the talks. We look forward to seeing you there!

Professor Karen Chapman

University/BHF Centre for Cardiovascular Science

Most people associate breast cancer with women. However, men can also be affected. Currently, 1 in 8 women in the UK will be affected by breast cancer during their lifetime. Huge steps have been made in understanding some of the complexities underpinning this disease and developing increasingly effective treatment strategies. This started here in Scotland, with Beatson’s discovery that in some women, removal of the ovaries can shrink tumours. Join us to hear about some of the key advances that have led to over 85% of women now living more than 5 years after diagnosis of breast cancer. We will explore exciting research aimed at developing new treatment strategies, that are personalised to the individual patient’s cancer, to maximise treatment effectiveness and limit unpleasant side-effects.

Speakers

Dr Helen Creedon, and Professor Val Brunton, Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre, The University of Edinburgh

Doors open 4.30pm with teas and coffees available.

Refreshments available after event.

Photography & filming

This event may be photographed and/or recorded for promotional or recruitment materials for the University or University approved third parties.

Film Screening of 'I Daniel Blake' followed by speaker and discussion of benefits sanctions @ Cabaret Voltaire

Come along to Cabaret Voltaire (36-38 Blair St, Edinburgh, EH1 1QR), doors open at 6.30pm and film starts at 7pm. After the film a discussion about the benefits reforms and issues associated with poverty will take place with Mike Cormack from Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty

This is a free community screening of ‘I Daniel Blake’ in light of the benefits sanctions and the devastating effects that benefits sanctions are having on people. Come along and take part in the discussion and hear about the issues that have forced the Scottish Government to restructure their provision of benefits in the light of UK welfare reforms.

‘I Daniel Blake’ is the latest film made by Ken Loach and screen writer Paul Laverty.  The film has been critically acclaimed around the world receiving multiple awards and accolades such as winning the Palme d’Or – the highest prize at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival as well as the Prix du public – the prize awarded by the audience attending at the 2016 Locarno International Film Festival.

The film follows the story of an out of work carpenter, Daniel Blake as he tries to negotiate the heart condition which keeps him from working and the benefits system.  Whilst trying to communicate his doctors advice to the those who are administrating the benefits, he meets and befriends Katie and her two children, Dylan and Daisy who have been forced to relocate from their home London…

Come and take part in a nation wide series of screenings where the distribution company has made it available to communities pre-release to DVD so that important conversations can take place and so that people who have not seen the film, and who cannot afford to, may do.

Cancellations

If you sign up but realise you can’t make it, or if you accidentally book extra spaces for any reason, please make sure to cancel your ticket so the place can be released to someone else!
