In the wake of the UK’s vote to leave the European Union and the surprise victory of Donald Trump in the US Presidential election, new questions are being raised about the future of the transatlantic alliance. What is to become of longstanding institutions, such as NATO? How would European integration be affected by an unprecedented lack of support from the American administration? What will be the shape of trade relations going forward, with or without TTIP? Will governments have a united approach on external challenges, such as relations with Russia? Our panel will consider these and other questions facing both sides of the Atlantic.

Dr John MacDonald is a founder and Director of the Scottish Global Forum, an international affairs think tank. His expertise includes transatlantic security, the politics of war and military intervention and American politics. As an advisor and consultant, he has worked on Arctic change, UK defence policy, security policy, diplomatic exchange and democracy promotion.

Dr Arianna Andreangeli is Senior Lecturer in Competition Law at the University of Edinburgh. Her research interests focus on the EU’s Single Market and competition, including EU and national competition law, innovation and regulation. She has done work on the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and Minimum Alcohol Pricing, featuring comparisons between Scotland and Canadian provinces.

Dr Andrew Hom is Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Edinburgh. His research includes work on international security, critical security studies, temporality, classical realism, social constructivism and just war theory. He previously worked on the Moral Victories Project at the University of Glasgow, evaluating the ethical issues around the manner in which armed conflicts end.

This event is free. Registration in advance required. All are welcome
