Local Economy Group @ Adult Learning Project, Adult Learning Project, Tollcross Community Centre
Mar 3 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Local Economy Group @ Adult Learning Project, Adult Learning Project, Tollcross Community Centre | Scotland | United Kingdom

The Local Economy Group is a space for learning about Edinburgh’s economy. It explores issues such as Council funding, austerity, housing and political exclusion and asks the question, ‘how do changes in the Old Town affect local people?’

The Adult Learning Project runs free courses in women’s studies, politics, economics, culture and community, literacies, the arts and community development.

Based on the philosophy and practice of educationalist and activist Paulo Freire, ALP believes in learning as part of our daily lives: things of interest, things of personal use and things to help us make our communities better and stronger. Together we can investigate the world; educate and empower ourselves and each other; learn from ‘experts’ / professionals and from people with more experience – through dialogue, on equal terms, and in a co-operative way.

If you’re interested in getting involved or finding out more about the project, you’re welcome to come along to one of our monthly association meetings. The ALP Association is an independent body made up of adult learners and supporters of ALP. Members meet on the fourth Monday of each month at 18:45 in Tollcross Community Centre.

Ragged University: Philosophy and Truth Series by Tina Röck @ Safari Lounge

Come along to the Safari Lounge (21 Cadzow Pl, Edinburgh EH7 5SN) at 6pm to join the discussion about Philosophy and Truth…

Philosophy and Truth Series by Tina Röck

We are all aware that it is becoming increasingly more difficult to distinguish fact from fiction in our fast-paced information society. This has led some to announce the end of truth, or to consider ours a post-truth society. I would like to be a little more careful. Instead of simply proclaiming the death of truth, it seems to be more appropriate to claim that we are living in a time of crisis – a crisis of truth.

What we believe to be true still guides our actions, therefore in a practical sense, there can be no doubt that truth matters. It is simply not the case that modern western societies in general do not care at all about truth anymore (though there might be individuals that do not care), the core problem seems to be that it has become impossibly hard to find the truth. In this talk series I want to discover with all of you what you think truth is and give you some philosophical tools to think about truth

Hacklab Open Night @ Edinburgh Hacklab | Scotland | United Kingdom

One of our regular drop in open nights, no need to call ahead, just turn up! We’ll be tinkering with hardware, hacking some code and probably eating. Feel free to come along with a project or idea for some help, use some tools, or just hang out.

Edinburgh Hacklab is a hackerspace in Edinburgh. We were founded in 2010 and run regular open nights at our space at Summerhall, have an active mailing list and a good bunch of members and regular visitors.

Anyone is welcome at our Tuesday open nights, just drop in and say hello! Subscribe to our discuss mailing list (edinburghhacklab.com) for last minute changes to open nights and to see what’s going to be happening.

Bring along a project to tinker with, ask for some electronics help, hack some code or just have a chat and see what’s happening.
